Do you have to use shortening, or can you use 1 cup of butter? which would be better to use, 1/2 shortening and 1/2 butter or 1 cup of butter?

This is a good American buttercream esp. for cakes that need to sit out for a little bit. I like to whip my butter and shortening until really light and fluffy before adding the other ingredients.
