This looks like a really good recipe, but, per new USDA and Centers For Disease Control guidelines, you should never rinse your chicken, for two reasons-- first, the heat of cooking is sufficient to kill any and all bacteria that might be present, and because studies show that rinsing the chicken actually spreads bacteria, both in hidden areas you can't see, and via tiny water droplets which are dispersed throughout the room.

This is a must try! I have two teen boys. I can't cook often, I had rods and fusions Sept. 10, and I've never used my crock pot. I'm excited because this is easy cooking for my boys too!!

You can by this rubber thing that goes in the bottom of the crock pot. That does the same thing and you can put it in the dishwasher. I bought mine at Bed Bath and Beyond. JB

Instead of crumpling aluminum, I looked for a more sustainable material. My husband suggested river rocks. I found three smooth round stones and washed them well before using. (Potatoes definitely work, but I'm not eating potatoes these days.) I added an onion to the cavity, but it resulted in too much liquid. Stick with the basics as listed, and it comes out too good to believe!

The foil balls help by keeping the chicken above the juices so the fat drips off, making a healthier chicken and one that keeps it shape so that it doesn't fall apart. You can get the same benefits from a slow cooker roasting rack or just use three large potato halves at the bottom, middle of the slow cooker for the same effect.
