I agree with those who don't use soup or soup mixes. I put whole carrots on the bottom, cut mushrooms around the roast, and a can of beer. Throw away the carrots, and blend the mushrooms with the liquid and flour for a great gravy.

Hey Bill I never use that dry soup onion mix. I have the time to make stocks from scratch, which I then freeze and use as needed. I also find Goya beef boullion to a good flavor booster. Bon Appetit Todd

Try a can of condensed milk, or heavy cream along with a dozen or so sliced mushrooms, dehydrated onion or diced yellow onion, some dried thyme, chopped garlic or garlic powder to taste, and a couple of dashes of worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper to taste. You may need to thicken the gravy after removing the meat with a cornstarch slurry (2 T of cornstarch mixed with cold water or milk).

i was thinking also about the salt content...if you make your own cream of "____" soup ,available on this website, plus your own onion soup mix...again, you will dramatically drop the sodium....and tastes just as good!

Make this all the time and we all love it! I add a few packets of G washington beef broth for richer gravy....

I always go to your web site because it's so good. My husband will not eat any onions or garlic and so it's difficult to find something to substitute that will give me the flavor I like.

I can't wait to try this recipe. The comments of some reviewers and their recommended substitutes are very helpful to add flavor to the dish.I am more confident in cooking since I have discovered your videoed recipes.

I Love pot roast, and second the plea for low-sodium recipes. Does anyone have one to recommend?

How about some pot roast recipes that don't involve canned soup (too much salt and BPA from the can) or dry soup mix (too much salt) the whole idea of my cooking at home is to get away from cans and mixes that have preservatives and other unknown variables.

I cook with a similar recipe but use a packet of the mushroom/onion soup mix instead. I cut slits into the roast and rub the soup mix well all over the meat and inside the slits. I don't bother searing the meat and I don't add water or broth. Instead, I pour a can of diced tomatoes with the liquid inside the can and it's very delicious. About 1 hour before the roast is done, however, I throw in my potatoes and carrots, because they come out too soggy during the 8 hours in the slow cooker.
