This is not a one pot meal.

I like to experiment when cooking. One thing that has become very popular is my variation on this dish which is to add a bit of chile powder when browning the meat and then mix in a large can of Mexicorn. Gives a little kick without overwhelming the more delicate palettes.

Way too much in this recipe. Use an electric mixer to whip the potatoes and try corn instead of carrots.

Probably already been said, but this is cottage pie, not shepherds pie, which (surprise surprise) is a mutton dish, usually made with ground leftover roast in gravy. Whatever, a layer of defosted frozen peas is essential, and parboiled corn kernel a further option. A good dollop of tomato paste + worcester sauce instead of ketchup gives a deeper flavour. And, if you are cooking your meat from scratch, you can grate clean unpeeled raw carrots directly into the raw meat. Easier, and you can fool the "I hate carrots" brigade. There is always one.

Looks good, though a bit time consuming. My hubbie loves shepherd's pie, and Kathie's comment seems reasonable. The only thing that stood out to me in this video was every time salt was added it looked like way too much! I don't add a lot of salt in the water when I boil veggies…is it just me?

I usually put the potatoes and carrots on bottom then the meat. I then top with a cornbread mixture. YUM

To save a bit of your energy: before mashing the potatoes put the seasonings, butter, onion and cheese then mash away but use your hand mixer instead of the pastry blender. Mash the carrots? Why? Kids won't eat them. Put some of the mashed potatoes in the bottom of a greased casserole, then the meat, carrots, (I add some peas and whole corn), and cover with the rest of the potatoes. Bake and then top with cheese the last 10 minutes.
