This is my "go to" recipe for cut-out sugar cookies! Absolutely the best recipe for cut-outs. We make them for Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Easter, Halloween & Christmas! Whenever it gets close to one of these days, my kids are like "Mom, when are we decorating cookies"! It's a tradition now, and I know that I will use this recipe for years to come. It will be handed down to my kids as well! Great recipe!

accidently softened butter too much, (melted in micro) hope they come out well anyway.

These cookies were great! I have food sensitivities to eggs and butter, so I made a couple of substitutions to lessen the amount of that. I used only 2 real eggs and then used Bob's Red Mill Egg Replacer for the other 2 eggs; and 1C butter and then substituted the other 1/2C butter with SOY margarine. It came out VERY doughy, but I just added alot more flour and they are WONDERFUL!!

I am NOT a baker, I followed the instructions to the tee, but when baking the cookies the NEVER flattened out to a cookie. Just more or less stayed in a ball and baked. Sort of dry. I creamed butter and sugar eith a metal spoon, maybe that's where I went wrong.

Izzadore to clarify your research.. if one uses baking soda w/o cream of tarter in recipe the cookies will have a heavier more dense consistancy and when baked in the oven will brown more appearring little darker in color. If using baking powder the cookie will have a lighter/flufferier consistancy and will not brown as much when baked, appearing lighter in color.

TO HAPPY PHOTOGRAPHER. Start with 1 and a half cups of soft butter and 2 cups of white sugar. Beat in 4 eggs. 1 teaspoon of vanilla abstract. make the mix smooth as you can. stir in 5 cups of all purpose flour 2 teaspoons of baking powder and one teaspoon of salt. Once mixture is holding together well cover it with plastic wrapping and store in fridge for atleast an hour if you have time over night. when its cool your ready to roll out and cut your cookies. Before you roll out preheat your oven to 400 degrees. put flour on the surface you will be rolling on and cutting. Hope this helps 1 day before christmas eve :/ Hope this helps anyone else too.

Wonder if it'd work out all right if I used soft tub margarine (not the fat-reduced kind) instead of butter?

my previous post should have said "If you look at other recipes you will see that if they call for baking soda you also need to use cream of tartar."
