Once you make this recipe for Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner, you will never do it any other way. Someone asked "why the slow cooker?" and the great thing about the slow cooker is it keeps them warm without having to rush and get the potatoes done at the last minute. The slow cooker also makes them so creamy! The only thing I suggest is putting a kitchen towel under the lid of your crockpot to absorb the condensation to avoid the recipe getting too runny.

I made these last year for Thanksgiving, if you use fat free cream cheese and light sour cream it makes a dent in the calories. I prepare 5 lbs of potatoes so I make them a day ahead. Then warm them in the crockpot while preparing other sides. It saves me time Thanksgiving day and we have warm delicious potatoes without that last minute rush to mash the potatoes.

I have never tried the slow cooker however I have used the cream cheese and sour cream instead of just butter and milk. My family all over the U.S now cooks them every holiday...calorie loaded but we only cook them at Thanksgiving and Christma so it is ok. Everyone rants and raves about this recipe.

I agree; just a way to keep them warm for several hours while you work on everything else. Could cook them the day before I suppose and then put them in the crock pot to heat while other preparations are being done. I can certainly see that as an option. In my little kitchen, the slow cooker takes up a LOT of space. Could go on the kitchen table I imagine, where the rest of the meal could be placed, as well, buffet-style. As far as one comment about the calories--BOY HOWDY. I agree with that one.

Wow. These look great. My friend made a slow cooker mashed potatoes recipe one time. They were greasy and had a ton of garlic. It kind of made me skeptical about slow cooker mashed potato recipes. I'll try this. :)
