I don't understand the purpose of simple syrup. If you have a good cake recipe, why alter it with simple syrup? Is flavor it's only purpose?

I knew all of the steps except for the part to stick it in the fridge until the frosting is firm. Totally makes sense! Will definitely try on my next cake :)
