When I don't have ham I slice then quarter smoked sausage and follow the recipe as written.

Nice soup. That's not country ham, though. Country ham is salt cured. If you used it in this soup, I'm afraid it would be inedible. Way too salty. What he has in the video is just a regular ham steak. Really good, simple, inexpensive recipe.

This is how my mom always made split pea soup minus the celery. I also make it without the celery but I add diced carrots. One of my favorite homemade soups. Simple and delicious! I think I am going to make some this weekend.

Split pea soup tastes great with cumin powder and sour dough bread. That's how my Dad used to serve it.

You said if there were cracker soup, your father would have eaten it. My mother would use Uneeda biscuits, break them up and boil them is some water. When they were soft, she would add a little butter. This was great when we had tummy aches, as well as a breakfast cereal. While I have on occasion made this soup, it just isn't the same without Uneeda biscuits, which I haven't seen on supermarket shelves in years.

Looks like a great recipe and I can't wait to try it. One quibble, and it's a small one. The ham used in this video is not country ham. But I wouldn't think you'd want to use country ham in this recipe anyway. Smoked ham is the way to go.
