I've made this with Black Hawaiian salt, and it's THE BEST pulled pork (from a crock pot) that I've ever tasted!!!

Are the bananas green or ripe?

I have tried this in the oven also but I added some soy sauce, Hawaiian Rock salt and wrapped it up in Tea leaf or Banana leaf and covered pan with foil at 350 degrees for 3 hrs or until meat is soft. Delishous!

I use Kiawe Liquid Smoke and wrap the meat in banana leaf or Ti leaves then add a foil lid between the meat and lid to keep the moisture locked in.

I would have to add a little barbecue sauce to this, although it looks delicious- I just like a little sweetness. I would serve this with potato salad, as I HATE coleslaw.

This is how I cook it too. The bananas that LaCosta Lotta posted about sound interesting! What does the banana add if you can't taste it?

Just served up my umpteenth kalua pork meal from my slow cooker. My variation: wrap the seasoned pork butt with banana leaf from your local Asian Market to seal in the smokey flavor, as does the Hawaiian imu.

This is exactly how I make my kalua pork except I learned to add one more ingredient from my Hawaiian friend. About 2 or 3 hours before serving she cuts up about 1/2 head of cabbage and adds it to the pork. It's the way she taught me so it's the way I do it. It tastes great!

This is a great starter recipe. Be sure to use Hawaiian Alae Salt (red in color)for that real Hawaiian taste (Amazon carries it). For the last hour of cooking, I shred the pork, and add 1 head of cabbage (cut in wedges) and 2 sliced Maui onions. I toss it all together with the juices from the slow cooker, and 1 tsp. soy sauce, return it to the slow cooker and cook on high for 1 hour, or until veggies are semi soft. To save time, you could also carmalize the onions, saute the cabbage, and toss with rest of the ingredients until heated through. We serve this with a side of fresh pineapple cole slaw, sliced tropical fruit salad (mangos, pineapple, papaya and bananas), Plantation (or mango) iced tea, and Haupia coconut cake or pie for dessert....SO 'ONO!!!
