turtlepeg - My grocery store also no longer carries ham hocks. Instead they offer ham shanks which the butcher says are meatier. Hope this helps. The recipe sounds delicious.

I wish I could give this recipe 10 stars. Wow!! It's was a hit with my family. We used up a number of Thanksgiving leftovers and enjoyed a wonderful dinner of soup & bread sticks. I LOVE this recipe.!!!!!

I am having difficulty buying ham hocks in any of the stores. They used to be easily available, what would be an option? Thanks Turtle Peg

Add a few biscuit slices of country ham :D Yummy! Veggie stock to boil the beans in instead of water could add extra rich flavor.

I even like cubing the skin and adding it back to the soup

Don't discard the hamhock; if you let it cook in the soup from the beginning you can cut off the skin and chop up the amazingly tender meat and add it to the soup.
