Umm yeah, I think that this is an ok base recipe. But changes should be made. First off, start by making a roux for a base, using equal parts butter and flour, then add your milk/stock. Cornstarch is not typically used in this fashion and definitely not used in making a bachemel sauce, which is what this seemingly is. I actually like canned mushrooms, but if I had the extra time, I'd slice up some crimini's or button mushrooms for this dish and saute them, maybe adding another veg too if you like. I would also maybe add a touch of nutmeg for the sauce and a little cayenne or red pepper flakes to give it a little kick. The addition of a fresh herb would certainly brighten the dish a bit, such as parsley. This is just my two cents.

Tried this recipe tonight and was very disappointed. I even sauteed mushrooms and a little red bell pepper to substitute for the canned, and the rest of the recipe was not worth all that work! Will keep looking for a better recipe. Seems like Allrecipes would pick the best recipe for a video!

Canned mushrooms are not what I think of as processed product, not like, say, cream of mushroom soup. It isn't hard to cut up fresh mushrooms, true, but a single can of mushrooms doesn't make this recipe other than home-cooked. You are exaggerating with the "every ingredient a processed and packaged food product" statement.

It's hardly home cooked if every ingredient is a processed & packaged food product. This is the discord between "Whole" or Real food and what people think is real food. How hard is it to cut up some fresh mushrooms?
