I think I would have either done without the cloves or at least removed them before putting it in the blender.

Just use ground cloves or an old trick is to stick the cloves in a whole onion. Then you can remove when finished and process the onion with the tomatoes,

Can I water-bath can this recipe? I read that I shouldn't can recipes that have been thickened with corn starch or flour, but I'm not sure about a roux that has been cooked in...
