I used to recipe to enhance my almost famous slow smoked pulled pork... Instead of rolling into pretzels I rolled it out into 3"-4" squares and inserted 2-3tbsp of pulled pork. Roll into a ball. Dip in the baking soda bath and bake... These coat with Carolina Mustard BBQ Sauce and you have the most amazing appetizer/dinner... People can't get enough. With or without the salt...

even though it doesn't contain butter the pretzels taste buttery I was thinking the same thing and made them they are awesome I found this recipe maybe a month ago and I have made it maybe 8 times since my family can't get enough they never last more than a day and a half. I have given to friends as well and everyone loves them the only difference is I use quick rising yeast instead of active dry just because that is what I had on hand and regular salt again because what I had on hand and they are still awesome. Deffinitely make sure the dough is at room temp or warm when you are kneading it or you will have extremely tough dough that is hard to work with. First time I made it, was on a cold night and the kitchen wasn't warm even I popped a wrist out of place kneading they were still delicious and since I make sure I work with it while its warm :D

Yes, sea salt can be subsituted for kosher salt.

why is it called BUTTERY soft pretzel when the recipe doesen't call for any butter?!

haven't tried these yet but tomorrow for sure, they sound sooo good, and yes I do believe that coarse sea salt can be used in place of kosher salt, unless of course you eat kosher.

does anyone know if the kosher salt can be replaced with coarse sea salt?

This is a swiss staple and we brush the bretzels with unsugared condensed milk immediately when they come out of the oven, it gives them a lovely glossy shine. If you are making them bigger, you can cut them horizontally and fill them with herbed cream cheese, herbed butter, butter and prociutto or with whatever that makes you happy:-)))
