We love this salad. I followed the recipe exactly for the dressing in terms of quantity of sugar (1/2 c), but next time we have it we decided to cut back on the sugar and see how we like that. My husband said he liked it but "you wouldn't want it any sweeter." I think, like so many other reviewers, that the quantity of sugar can be cut back. I used balsamic vinegar as others suggested. I agree that the minced onion in the dressing adds a lot of flavor and you don't even realize it's there. I meant to use red onion but forgot; still delicious. I toasted the sesame seeds and the almonds. I did not blanch the almonds -- no need to, in my opinion. Love them toasted though and it's so easy to do. Any fruit would be delicious. I followed others' suggestions and topped the salad with crumbled bleu cheese. I don't even like it, but the tang of the cheese was a good counterbalance to the sweetness of the dressing. We also added chicken as we had it as a main dish, not a side salad. Absolutely delicious. One thing I love too is how absolutely beautiful it is -- as though you were in the finest restaurant. :) Not too much preparation time and everything can be done ahead and assembled when you serve it. I served the everything separately because it was only us two. If I was making for company I would assemble it but serve nuts and dressing on the side. Thanks for great recipe.
