I usually use ham hocks, but I didn't have any, so I used about 3/4 lb. of bacon. Saute bacon till brown, drain grease, add 1 chopped onion, 3 cloves of garlic, 3 carrots, 3 ribs of celery (which I chopped in the food processor), 1 tsp thyme, 1/2 tsp. ground cardamom, 1/8 tsp. of cloves, 1/8 tsp. of allspice, 1 bayleaf, 2 tsp. chili garlic sauce & 1 tsp. salt. Saute the veges for a few minutes, than add 3 cups of yellow split peas. Fill the pan with water, and add more water as needed. Cook a couple of hours till everything is soft. The spices really perk up this recipe. Delicious!
