“This is a modification of my father's hoppin' john recipe. The only difference between his and mine is the use of tomatoes. It's a great recipe for the holidays (New Year's) or any time during winter months. There are many versions of this recipe here, but this one is quick so you can throw it together after a long day at work for the whole family to enjoy!”

delicious and so easy! We used pork kielbasa diced up and browned. Delicious with Tony's Creole seasoning.

Wonderful, quick soup! I used sliced smoked sausage instead of the sage pork sausage (don't like sage), and only one can of diced tomatoes. I also added 2 cans of cream of mushroom soup, to make more of a stew like texture. Excellent flavor, quick and easy to assemble - this recipe will be one of my regulars! Thanks for sharing!

Nice and tasty for the amount of effort involved. I used some homemade wild hog sage sausage, and used 1 can of hot rotel tomatoes and peppers instead of 2 cans of tomatoes. Good wintertime meal. Really wish I had made some cornbread......

first time i made this i rated it a 3 then we ate the leftovers the next night and it was 100 times better. made it again last saturday, threw it in the fridge then reheated it and served it sunday. totally the way to go!

This soup was execellent I made it for New Years and again after everyone liked it and wanted the recipe. Only thing I did different was add my favorite HOT salsa for a kick.

Loved this and I usually hate black-eyed peas. We used Smoked Turkey Sausage and added some sage rather than using the pork. Will definitely make after New Years.

To "cajunize" it a little, I added celery, onion and bell pepper. It was good, but greatly benefited from having a serving of cornbread in the bottom of the bowl. Flavors improved on day two.

Great recipe. I also added onions,peppers,& celery,since I used plain brown rice.Tomatoes really adds to the flavor.5 stars.

I thought this was yummy, but my husband didn't like it. I used Rotelle tomatoes for the diced tomatoes, and added some onion, green pepper, and celery when browning the sausage, but kept everything else the same. I thought it was hearty, and the flavors were excellent. It was even better the next day!
