I liked this a lot. Yes, it was sweet. But as the poster mentioned, maple syrup is soooo yummy. Which brings me to my first point: use REAL maple syrup. Not the flavored high fructose corn syrup (lite or otherwise!) - when a recipe calls for maple syrup, it means the concentrated tree sap; don't substitute, it never turns out right. I added 1/2 t horseradish as someone mentioned; it took away some of the sweet without adding a strong flavor. I also took that extra marinade and threw it on my stove to boil for a few minutes. Made the yummiest glaze. The kids loved this. In fact, I had a hard time stopping them from eating the marinade (before I added the salmon)!
