I just made this recipe today, and now I understand why there was a mess in the oven, if they used an 8" square pan.
These rolls are quite large, and there is NO WAY that they would cook and NOT spill over if you used the named sized pan. I used 2 9x13" pans and baked for 30 min. These rolls filled each pan with 6 rolls in each pan. There must have been a mistake in the pan size in this recipe. I have been baking for many years, so sorta knew when I read this that the pan size was incorrect.
If you use the 9x13 pans, these come out very well. Just be sure to turn them out within 5 min or you will have to rewarm them to get them to come out.
Dough is really great, rolls out well and has a nice flavor, I added vanilla flavoring to the dough too.
