Directions

  1. In large skillet melt butter over medium-high heat. Cook ground beef in butter until brown, 3 to 5 minutes. Stir in chopped onion and cook until beef juices run clear, 3 to 5 minutes. Drain.
  2. Stir in salt, pepper, paprika and chile powder. Add water to cover, and simmer until water is absorbed, stirring frequently, 10 to 15 minutes.

I felt Sauce was a tad too much chili powder. A famous Michigan Coney restaurant uses these proportions of condiments: 1 lb. hamburgh 80/20 fat ratio. small onion, chopped, 2 tsp. chilipowder(kind that has cumin in it already), 1 tsp. cumin, 2 tsp. Hungarian sweet Paprika, 1/4 tsp black pepper, 1/2 tsp salt, 1 tsp. white sugar. The mixture is prepared as Joanie suggests. In addition, once the meat is browned, one should "pulse" the meat in a food processor for about 2-3 seconds to break up the "strands" of meat. The white buns should be 7 in. in length and slightly steamed, and the Koegel brand Vienna hotdog is just heated and then topped with the sauce and finally generously topped with chopped sweet onion bits.

Be very cautious in trying this recipe for children! My husband and I thought it was okay, but I wondered if I had done something wrong with the spices! (Should the measurements be teaspoons?) It was awfully hot, even after I added a small amount of sugar, some ketchup, and removed some of the spice. Kids ate plain hotdogs, and husband did not request a repeat. I was disappointed, it looked good.

My fiance LOVES coney island's, and he thinks this sauce is just about perfect. I added some garlic and a small amount of sugar to the recipe.

Fantastic sauce. I did not change a thing. It turned out wonderful. Super easy to make. My 10 year old son fell in love with it. He said "It's much better than the canned kind we usually use" And he loves the canned type. Thank you so much.

this recipes just didnt look right without good old tomatos.so heres what I did I added tomato puree,sugar, and garlic to joanies recipe.I left everything else the same, I let this cook in the crock on low for a few hrs .as far as the spices go though I added alot more chili powder to give it a little zip,and as it cooked I added spices to my taste yours might be differant than mine.was perfect.my husband loves it.

I added extra salt, but I liked this a lot. If you order burgers or hots "with everything," this is the sauce you are looking for.
