  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Lightly grease baking sheet.
  2. In a saucepan melt chocolate over low heat. Let cool.
  3. In a small bowl mix flour, baking powder and salt.
  4. In a medium bowl beat margarine on low speed until smooth. Add sugar and beat until creamy. Stir in egg, vanilla and chocolate. Add flour mixture and mix well, forming a stiff dough.
  5. To make spider, shape a 2 inch flat oval for the body. Make the spider's head by flattening a circle about 1/2 inch wide. Shape dough for legs each about 2 inches long and less than 1/4 inch wide.
  6. Attach the head and legs to body. Put two red candies into head for eyes. Bake for 5-8 minutes. Let spiders cool on baking sheet to avoid breaking when moving.

This was a disappointing recipe. The dough was very crumbly; I had to press it together with my hands before I could form it into spiders. Of course, this made the actual shaping of the cookies very difficult! I ended up only making four because it was so hard, and putting the leftover dough (or should I say crumbles?) into the fridge for my family to eat. The spiders themselves, once baked, were pretty cute, but they were very hard and brittle. Several legs broke off in the process of moving the spiders, even though I let them cool as the recipe suggested. A few of the legs burned before the rest of the cookie was baked, as well. My siblings said they tasted okay, but not great. Sorry, but I will not be making these again!

The heads and legs of these spiders fell off after baking. The cookies were tasty.

Actually making the spider shape and having it not look like a magnified virus is slightly difficult. However the mixture of chocolate and cinnamon hearts is wonderful, the cookies stayed soft and I was able to make wonderful letters out of the dough.

3 years ago I made these cookies, and I kid you not it took me 3 solid hours just to make four! One hour was spent desperately trying to mix the impressively dry dough together without breaking my utensil until I gave up, and two more hours were spend actually shaping the cookies - It took an hour each to shape 2 spiders and I gave up to make a couple cat heads with the remaining dough, which was very crumbly. When they came out of the oven, they looked quite frightening (apt for Halloween, I suppose) and had the consistency of concrete and the flavor of cardboard. I forgot to leave a review, but this recipe was so awful that it still haunts me to this day. I figure if I reviewed it, the nightmares would cease. I've attached a low quality picture that has survived after all these years as proof of the ordeal I went through only for the fruits of my labor coming out as a monstrosity I cannot stress enough as anything less than an horror that wiped out any remaining faith in a higher being - perhaps it was a glitch in the Matrix, but to call them cookies is a lie, they are rocks masquerading as edible material. Don't make these cookies, they are bad.
