I'd give this 5 stars, but my hubby was only fairly impressed, so I gave it 4. I used Italian sausage (for some spice) and sliced it after broiling and added directly to the apples/onions and simmered so the sausage picked up the other flavors. Being of Germanic heritage, this recipe reminded me of traditional German cooking! The apples and onion really came together with all the other flavors! With all the different tastes going on, it's a "busy" flavor - a symphony of tastes... maybe too busy for my hubby's pallet, but I LOVED it!
