8 slices Roman Meal Bread
8 teaspoons softened butter
1 Granny Smith apple, cored, quartered and thinly sliced
1 1/2 cups grated Gruyere cheese

4 tablespoons honey
1 pinch salt
1 pinch black pepper

Directions

Preheat large heavy skillet over medium heat.
Spread 1 side of each slice of bread with 1 teaspoon butter. Place 4 slices bread, butter side down, into skillet.
Layer apple slices, cheese and honey evenly onto bread in skillet. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Top with remaining bread, butter side up, creating 4 sandwiches.
Cook 3 to 4 minutes or until the bottom slices of bread are golden brown. Carefully flip each sandwich. Cook an additional 2 to 3 minutes or until golden brown and cheese is melted.

The sweetness of the apples and honey mixed with the bite of the gruyere was delicious. Using good quality honey really makes a difference. It is the star of the sandwich!

My husband and I liked but the kids didn't. Using a Granny smith made a big difference. I might try a different cheese next time because the gruyere is pretty expensive.

My family loves grilled cheese sandwiches and it was great to find a new twist to the old standby. I used sourdough bread instead of the bread indicated in the recipe.

Yummy! I really liked this sandwich! The honey-apple-cheese combo is truly an interesting one. I cut this down to make one sandwich, used red apple instead of green (coz that's what I had on hand), and skipped the pepper. But I will try this with green apple very very soon! :) Do remember to let the cheese melt completely and to serve hot! Thank you for sharing the recipe!

I always love a traditional grilled cheese sandwich, but this replaces it!! Except, I substituted mozzarella for the gruyere. A whole lot cheaper and you don't have to grate the cheese!
