Good basic recipe, however, I substituted margarine for the shortening (to add a buttery flavor) and I used 14-16 ounces of molasses to add to the plasticity of the dough in the subsequent rolling out of the dough. With only 12 ounces, the dough becomes very dry in the additional rollings and difficult to get good quality cookies. I will also vary the recipe by using cane syrup instead of molasses for a milder flavor. With a frosting of confectioner's sugar, butter, milk, and vanilla, either colored or with colored sprinkles, I have multiple requests from friends and family for these hallmark cookies!!!
