  1. Heat oven to 350 degrees F. In large bowl, beat brown sugar, shortening and granulated sugar until creamy. Add egg, water and vanilla; beat well. Add combined oats, flour, salt and baking soda; mix well.
  2. Drop dough by rounded teaspoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheets.
  3. Bake 11 to 13 minutes or until edges are golden brown. Remove to wire rack. Cool completely. Store tightly covered.

  • Variation
  • Add 1 cup of any one or a combination of any of the following ingredients to basic cookie dough: raisins, chopped nuts, chocolate chips or shredded coconut.
  • Drop by rounded tablespoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheets. Bake 15 to 17 minutes. ABOUT 2-1/2 DOZEN
  • Press dough onto bottom of ungreased 13 x 9-inch baking pan. Bake 30 to 35 minutes or until light golden brown. Cool completely in pan on wire rack. Cut into bars. Store tightly covered. 24 BARS

This is a solid Oatmeal cookie recipe. I made these exactly as shown, with the addition of 1 cup chocolate chips. Made 3 dozen cookies. They bake up great. The taste is good - I wasn't blown away by them, but they're pretty good. I am thinking maybe some butter and more oats would help the recipe, but otherwise - this is a good Oatmeal cookie recipe and I will be making them again!

This is an amazing cookie!!! You will love this! At home my family would just pig out on these cookies... Never leaving me any at all sometimes.... But these cookies are to die for!!! I first made them back in September and they were a big hit! So I hope ya'll enjoy these too!!

My family loved this recipe. The cookies were chewy but still a little crunchy and the flavor was what my husband and I remember from when we were kids.

Very good cookie, my children loved them. They stay together & don't run all over the pan and also stayed soft for a week. For less calories, I substituted Equal for the granulated sugar & used the brown sugar made for diabetics; I also added 1/4 tsp. cinnamon & a pinch of ground nutmeg which gave the cookie a great flavor. Will definitely make these again!

I added 1 cup rasins and 2 tsp cinnamon and got rave reviews. People kept asking me how I made the cookies, I was almost embarassed to say how easy they were to make. I sometimes substitute 1 cup of corn oil plus 1/2 tsp salt for the shortening. I just like to do that because it is easier to cream with the sugars by hand rather than with an electric mixer.

these are good -- but not as good as my brothers -- he told me he used the recipe on the quaker oat box -- it must be a different one -- mine came out all cakey like -- but his are large and flat and crispy -- and that's what i'm looking for.
