Original Recipe Yield 8 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1/3 cup chopped green pepper
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 1/2 cups Heinz® Tomato Ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Heinz® Worcestershire Sauce
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 8 sandwich buns

Directions

  1. Heat oil in a large frying pan set over medium-high heat. Saute onions and green pepper for 5 minutes.
  2. Add beef to the pan. Cook, stirring until browned, about 5 to 10 minutes. Drain off fat.
  3. Stir in ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, sugar, salt and pepper. Simmer over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, for 10 minutes or until slightly thickened. Serve on sandwich buns.

Footnotes

  • Twists:
  • Twist 1: For burger-appeal, jazz-up Sloppy Joes with additional toppings such as shredded lettuce, chopped tomato, grated cheese, sour cream or ranch dressing.
  • Twist 2: For a meat variation, use lean ground chicken or pork instead of beef.
  • Twist 3: For a Veggie boosted Joe, stir in 1 cup each shredded carrot and chopped mushrooms.
  • Twist 4: For a high fibre alternative, try whole-wheat pitas or rolls instead of sandwich buns.
  • Twist 5: For a chunkier Joe, use Heinz Chili Sauce, Chunky with Sweet Peppers instead of ketchup.
  • Twist 6: For a smokey-flavoured Joe, use one of the Heinz BBQ Sauces instead of ketchup.
