Ingredients

  • 2 cups chopped dates
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2/3 cup shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • TOPPING:
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts

Directions

  1. In a bowl, combine dates and water; set aside to cool (do not drain). In a mixing bowl, cream sugar and shortening. Add eggs, flour, baking soda and salt; mix well. Add dates. Pour into a greased and floured 13-in. x 9-in. x 2-in. baking pan. Combine the topping ingredients; sprinkle over batter. Bake at 350 degrees F for 40 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in the center comes out clean.
