I've read several reviews that state this comes out as a runny mess. I really do not understand that. My mother used to make this (or something similar) and I was so excited to find this recipe for it.
I've made it several times and it comes out fine every time. I do not keep self-rising flour, so I add 1 c. all-purpose flour, 1-1/2 t. baking powder and 1/2 t. salt to the batter. That is the only change I make.
The cobbler comes out with a chocolate cake-like top layer and a chocolate pudding bottom layer.
Be careful though. This really needs to cool down to just above room temperature in order for the pudding layer to 'set up'. I cool it completely, then reheat slightly in the microwave.
