Used the previously suggested modifications of salt and yeast, used honey instead of sugar and olive oil. My very first bread in my new bread machine and it was a home run! Thanks.

Good enough bread. Nothing extra special. I used melted butter instead of oil and as per reader suggestions increased the amount of salt to 1-1/4 tsp. I did like the fact that the crust was not thick like the other recipes I have tried in my bread maker.

I just tried this recipe. I have a 3 lb breadmaker so I figured it couldn't hurt to give a 1 1/2 lb loaf a try....wrong! The smoke is clearing out of my house as I type. This recipe overflowed and went all over the element. I would be very skeptical to try a recipe again that let the yeast work prior to adding the other ingredients. I would love to know what I did wrong.

Best homemade bread ever. Kids make me bake this at leasrt once a week and eat the whole loaf in one sitting. I also add the extra bit of salt. I also use melted butter instead of oil. Sometimes I also add some honey. This recipe makes a 1.5 lb loaf.

This is my FAVORITE bread machine recipe! I did modify it slightly - I used olive oil instead of vegetable oil and added chopped garlic. I also didn't have bread flour, so used unbleached instead, and used regular active dry yeast. As far as directions, I did exactly as the recipe said. It had by far the best texture of any loaf I have ever made in the machine. We WILL be making this again - maybe tomorrow!

This turned out perfectly delicious the first time with the recipe exactly as written (other than added 1.5 TB wheat gluten). The bread was perfectly slice-able for sandwiches with 3TB wheat gluten the second time around (one TB per cup of flour). Regardless of the gluten, this recipe is a KEEPER.

Yesterday, I bought a bread machine and made my first (basic) loaf of bread. It was bland...bland, bland, bland. Tonight, I attempted this recipe. I followed the instructions to a T, and I experienced what I've seen many other bakers seem to have experienced. It fell. :( Which is quite a shame, because the taste was wonderful, and it seemed quite promising! The crust was a bit crunchier than I'd prefer, and I used the "Light" crust setting. I'm hoping to try again using some of the suggestions in the comments.

I was nervous to try this recipe because it didn't follow the conventional recipe methods for my machine. I had recently acquired a bread machine and was dying to use it. This recipe was simple, and the bread was simply wonderful! I did modify based on other comments and added an extra 1/2 tsp of salt. Absolutely delicious! Enjoy!

I've had my bread machine for over a year, using only the recipes that came with the machine. Decided to give this one a try. ABSOLUTELY the BEST loaves out of my bread machine. I have made numerous times..using a couple alterations after reading other reviews.....more sugar 3 T (have also used honey) and a bit more salt (1 1/2 t) and I use 2 C bread flour, 1 C whole wheat. I use the basic setting on the bread machine, light crust setting This is my Go To recipe for every day bread...I make one or two loaves a week for my hubby & I. You won't be disappointed.
