I lived in an orphanage 50 years ago and helped out in the kitchen, Back then, I often made this wonderful coffee cake, dutifully following the recipe in the cookbook they used in that kitchen. Years later, when I saw Kate Smith on television, I realized that I had been using her cookbook to make this coffee cake. I was delighted to know I had been using one of Kate's favorite recipes!

On Sundays, friends and neighbors would stop at my Auntie Rae and Uncle Gene's house. Auntie Rae never cooked on Sundays, so she'd make this coffee cake on Sunday evening, from her own special 'receipt', as she called it. The next day, she'd serve it from the warming closet of her cast-iron kitchen range.

This coffee cake is always a hit with my family. I find it especially delicious because it's not too sweet. Of all the coffee cakes I've tried, it remains our family favorite.

My mom served this moist coffee cake every Sunday after church, but the peach topping was reserved for special occasions, like when company came. Usually she simply sprinkled sugar and cinnamon on top.

My grandmother came from Germany with a treasure trove of recipes. She was a farmer's wife, raised seven children and had 28 grandchildren. Every Christmas and Easter, she hosted the family dinner, cooking everything herself. This coffee cake was one of my favorites.

This is a Wisconsin recipe-using our own delicious sour cream, of course! What better place to enjoy a dish like this than in the Dairy State?
