This may be the best apple pie I've ever had, and I've made lots of apple pies over the last 50 years. Why not 5 stars? It really needs some spice. I added cinnamon, cardamon and a bit of nutmeg. I served it at a family dinner and everyone agreed it was wonderful. A WORD OF WARNING: be sure to put something under the pie to catch the bit that will cook out. I knew better, I just forgot. The syrup that cooked out filled my kitchen with smoke, set off the smoke alarm and after 4 cleanings I still haven't gotten all the burned-on residue off the floor of my oven. Not the fault of the recipe--my own carelessness. I'll be making this again, and soon. I'll just be more careful next time.
