Directions

  1. Combine milk with vinegar to make sour milk. Let stand for 5 minutes.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine sugars, shortening, eggs, and vanilla. Add flour, soda, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg.
  3. Stir in sour milk and mix well. NOTE: Dough will be very sticky and hard to handle. You could refrigerate it for a few hours, or just use plenty of flour when rolling out.
  4. Roll on well floured board to 1/2 inch thickness. Cut with cookie cutters to desired shapes (large cutters work best).
  5. Bake at 350 degrees F (180 degrees C) for 8 to 10 minutes or until lightly brown on bottom.
  6. Frost with Sugar Cookie Frosting (see recipe) and decorate.

These cookies are the worst I have ever tried to make. The dough never becomes workable. It just stays like a chocolate chip cookie dough, not matter how much flour or refrigeration used. Whe...

This recipe was disgusting. Sugar cookies are not supposed to be spicy. The nutmeg makes it taste gross. I waisted a lot of ingredients on this lousy recipe.

I made these cookies last Christmas, and they were the most popular food item there. My extended family expects them for every occaision. The are big , soft (never get hard), and very tasty. ...

Wow... I've been looking for a sugar cookie recipe for a long time. This is the BEST! Thank you for sharing it with us! :)

I totally disagree with everyone who is giving a bad review. i thought they were fine. my mom and nephew are in love with these cookies. the only thing was that they need to be cooked longer tha...

Yeah, it's hard to work with, but most recipes are. If you're substituting, remember that butter is different than shortening and they write the recipe specifically for shortening or butter, not...
