  1. Bring water and sugar to a boil in a saucepan; reduce heat and stir until the sugar has dissolved. Remove from heat and let syrup cool to room temperature. Stir in bitters. Store in 1-quart bottle with lid.

  • Best old fashion is made in a 16-ounce or larger glass with ice. Add 2 to 3 fluid ounces of your choice of one of the following: brandy, whiskey, bourbon, Southern Comfort(R).
  • For sweet old fashion: use lemon-lime soda (such as 7-Up(R) or Sprite(R)). For sour old fashion, use tangy grapefruit soda (such as Squirt(R)) or grapefruit soda. Garnish with orange slice, maraschino cherry, pineapple, or olives, Brussels sprouts, or mushrooms.
