My son broke the seal on a bottle of squeezable mayo. It sat out on the counter all night. I just realized it when I went to open it now (at the time I did not know what the popping sound was that I heard when I was yelling at him to stay out of the kitchen...he's 5) Do you think it is Ok or should I toss it?

I'd go by "when in doubt, throw it out."

Unfortunately, I think you'll have to toss it:( With the seal being broken, it's the same as leaving it out all night after it had been opened. I hate it when things like that happen lol (and they do around here), but it's better to be safe than sorry. Food poisoning is the worst!

I would be reluctant to throw it out, just to satisfy today's "lawyer safe" standards. If you think about it, (and I'm sure we all do) it sat on a grocer's shelf for who knows how long, unchilled, with this little "seal" to defend itself. So the lad cracked the seal, and closed the cap...I can't see where a lot of air or anything terrifically "bad" got in there, that squirting an ounce or so off of the top would not get rid of.

I completely agree with Chairlifter. It's not like it has raw egg in it and I've done the same left it out over night without any ill effects. So you should be safe, since like mentioned before its been sitting on a store shelf for who knows how long.

Certain products can be safely stored in the grocery store at room temp since they were manufactured with that in mind and vacuum sealed during processing. Once the air hits such products they can only be safely stored in the refrig. I would toss the product and buy fresh.

What is that "gas" under the miracle vacuum seal" on top of the tube? I always thought it was "air", but I may now be shown to be incorrect.

Some products are vacuum sealed to remove the air and an inert gas added (such as nitrogen). Once you break the seal, that gas escaped and air enters the product.

It's to my understanding that technically mayo does not need to be refrigerated. But I'm a big chicken and I would toss it.

If you house is really warm I would toss it, it you keep you house very cold at night it should be fine.

Well I think I am chicken enough to throw it out...we donT use mayo that much anyway. Only in potato salad and such....sigh. Thanks for th input everyone.

I say stick it back in the frig. Mayo can be left out, it's only when you introduce other foods into it, or that knife you used to spread it that you stick back into the jar :) Since all he did was pop the seal, should be fine. But, you go with what makes you comfortable, it's what I would do.
