I love grits and make some yesterday. Opened a new box of Quaker 5-minute grits, noticed a few dark brown flecks but didn't think anything about it. More appeared as the grits cooked. My question is, Is this okay or am I eating an alternate source of protein (bugs!)? Hoping the Southern gals can help me out here. TIA

It's probably just the chaff you see. The dry protective casings of the cereal grain.

Hi, PennyRoo. bd.weld is right...that's a normal thing for any grits that aren't instant (I never eat those!). I'm a grits lover! : )

Thanks for your quick responses. Will continue to enjoy but maybe keep them in the fridge since I don't use them up quickly.
