Sorry. Desperate need of a job. I've been unemployed more than a year. To apply on their website, they want my SS number. I think that's just plain wrong! What would they need it for? Am I mistaken in thinking that's ridculous when no interview has been set up, let alone no offer made? I think you SS number is pretty much sacred and should be protected. What does AR think?

Sorry for all the typos. I'm asking you, Nanny, because I know you work at Lowe's and wonder if they do the same thing.

i was also worried about that when appling at lowes-- the site is secure-- all the big companies do it now-- it is just the times-- if you have lowes in your area -apply there too- we have thousands of openings - getting ready for spring-- enen begin part time -temp- you will have fist pick at part time regular- and full time temp- and full time regular- now is the time-- get those apps done asap:-) good luck- i really love my job- the employees are so helpful - they guide me thru any questions that come up- in my area - i am on my own - so sometimes i have questions-- and they are always ready to help

apply for any and all positions- all you have to do is get you foot in the door-- they want me to go full time- but i know my body will not allow- i just put them off by saying - i need to fell really completely confidant in what i am doing noe before moving up- i need to do my job a full four seasons before going on to something else-- (i work in the garden center) i am the fill in person for the main guy on his days off- handling orders etc- once spring arrives-and we hire "waterers" i am to be in charge of their direction-- 2-4 peopel-- i should have another review any moment-- i got full allowed raise last time- if i get this one- i will be making more than i did when i left my last job(of 15 years) no bad for an old woman:-)

Nanny, thanks for your response. It may be "just the times", but your SS number info is for tax purposes and medical information only and I'm reluctant to give it out to just anyone, particularly online when everyone's getting hacked these days. Doesn't matter how secure any site is. When I shop at Bed Bath & Beyond, the checkout clerk always asks for my zip code and my response is, why would you need that? She says, so we can send you info on sales. I say, how can you send me info on sales when all you have is my zip code? She then looks at me like I have two heads and shuts up. Just another way of keeping track of us.

i don't give my zip either- but you will have to do the ss- because i don't believe you can go further with the app without it--

Cactus Rose, I work in HR and have recently been to a job medical... SS#, 14 pages of medical history... all, and I do mean allllll my history, 2 hour medical, and this, even before an interview. I told the Dr that working in HR, I knew there was nothing legal to this, well she said, they ask for a lot but are not allowed to access the info... all they want to know from the Dr is if you're employable... so I think it would be the same for your SS#... it will get you in the door :) Good luck to you!

Kkelly, I understand your point. Perhaps asking the SS number is to ensure you're legally allowed to work here. Food for thought (no pun intended). Thanks so much for your response.
