R.I.P. My favorite wooden spoon just broke! I think I've had it over 20 years - never even thought that could happen! Smoothe like glass, narrow enough to get into cans; you know the type. I knew you'd all understand...a moment of silence please. Have y'all ever had a fave piece of cooking equipment die that you never thought would?

My Mom went through this trauma a number of times...and blamed my butt, because thats where it would break! I certainly deserved it, but "tempus edax rerum" (time destroys all things) and there are more usefull tools to move on to.

OH, no! It's so sad when we lose something we love like that! RIP for sure. Chairlifter, you always make me laugh!

BTW, I've had about 10 knives sitting on my counter because I'm trying to decide if I really need to keep them. I've kept them in my drawer for way too long without using them, but I'm not sure about giving them away, either. One has been with me for 48 1/2 years, but I never use it. I need permission to put it to rest.

My condolences! No breakage yet in my kitchen. They all run away before that can happen! Sigh. Every time I move I lose a few things forever. Crockpots, ice buckets, favorite knives . . .

Permission is granted: you may now retire the extra knives!

Better that you outlived your spoon . . . you may not be so lucky next go round. A funeral service may be in order.

You guys never fail to make me laugh! I actually thought about gluing this thing back together. So I look at the other 4 I've got and well, meh... You guys get it. Now I'm thinking why do I even keep the other 4? Marianne, I'm with you - time to clean things out!

my favorite pan! It's not broken, but it was a cheapy pan and the nonstick stuff is peeling it's getting unusable. It makes the best sunny side up eggs. Going to be so lost when I toss it =(

My favourite wooden spoon which I called my lucky spoon snapped in half. I think I went into shock. I miss it so much. So I can sympathize with you. Get another wooden spoon. It will never be the same. I won't lie to you. When you've formed an attachment like we have, its just hard to get over. However, we will endure. We have each other.

Rosebud, I know you're right. Maybe I'll try bamboo-it's supposed to a very hard wood. But it's going to have to be that perfect shape (oh here I go again...) Must have used that thing everyday!

Lumpygravy, I feel your pain! My Sunbeam Mixmaster isn't quite dead, but it's threatening to. I bought a KA and HATE it because of the locked in bowl feature. I checked out new Mixmasters and they have the same feature :(

I gave up my favorites long ago, they were burned after oops too close to the burners :)Then eventually broke. I miss the wooden fork, always used it to stir the spaghetti. Now I just buy new when they need replacing. I have extra knives like Marianne. I use them infrequently(one almost never). Someday I may regift to my son. Let him figure out what to do with them.

And thank you to the person who came up with the metal spatula handles. I was always leaving them on the edge of the pan I was stirring and then would whack on the edge of the pan to clean. Or stirring too hard and crack, they are broken. Not so with these!

a couple of weeks ago i turned on a pot of water to boil and wnt to change clothes. all the sudden i hear this loud pop/shatter noise, run into the kitchen-i had turned on wrong burner!! my favorite glass 9x13 pyrex dish had exploded and of course melted my favorite spatula in the process-they were still on stove from night before-i know shame on me- i had glass everywhere. the glass was so hot a couple of pieces actually stuck to my rug i have at kitchen sink! so not only did i lose my favorite pyrex pan, but also my favorite spatula that i have had since me and dh were married 28 years ago! i still have the ladel that came with the set-i believe they were part of a kitchen "basket" i got for a shower present! so yes i feel and understand your pain!

yes, my cast iron dutch oven. I reseasoned perfectly and EvErYtHiNG!! It's older than I am (ahem much older than 21ys lol) and it will be sorely missed. I understand your pain.
