I was told lard was best for pie crust. Is there really any difference?

I haven't used it in years but the last time I did I thought it had a strong taste.

It will make a very tender, flaky crust but you must get good lard so you don't have that off taste.

I personally think it is the best for pie crusts and apple dumplings.

Many oldtime recipes commonly use lard. We are more aware of eating a healthy diet nowadays and I have never used lard in anything I make. If you look around I am sure you can find good crust recipes that are also more on the healthy side.

I would pick lard over crisco.

Nothing compares to lard for a flaky pie crust. I don't make pie crusts very often but when I do I use lard. We watch what we eat very closely almost the entire year. For those special occasions I use lard.

Have to say that I have never used lard in pie crust. I always use butter. Have had many compliments. I am not against lard, I use it when making tortillas but I love a butter pie crust.
