So my son JUST tells me, "oh, um, I need to take a German dish on Monday for Octoberfest in German class." I'm trying so hard to live off what I have here for a little more than 1 more week(adjusting my budget & shopping day). I happened to have just bought a pkg of original brats on clearance for $1.50(I think there are 5 in the pkg) & I have a lot of potatoes. I can pick up a little something, if necessary, & don't HAVE to use these items. What economical ideas do you have for a his German meal? Anything goes as long as it's cheap & if it feeds a crowd, even better! lol.

Sauerkraut and little smoked sausages simmer for hours in a sweet, tangy sauce flavored with cola soda in this easy, make-ahead slow cooker meal that's great for game day.

Hi ya Lisa...no taters in this but it sure looks good with the apple. You can just dice up your sausages.

Use ready-made meatballs -and some sweet-and-sour ingredients -to get the tangy, slow-cooked taste on this toothpick treat.

Not sure how "authentic" this recipe is, but I suspect kids would like them. Of course it uses none of the ingredients you mentioned!

Buy a package of coleslaw mix. Cook your brats and toss cooked sliced potatoes and the slaw mix into the skillet adding some butter or oil if too dry. fry it all up! The flavor of the brats will coat the slaw and potatoes. A great German inspired dish. I like to use Pierogi's in place of the potatoes sometimes.

Bacon gives this warm German potato salad recipe a boost of flavor. The vinegar and sugar dressing on this salad has the perfect combination of salty and sweet.

I'd make something like this. It's fast, cheap and yummy! There are a bunch of recipes for it on here.

I would do hot potato salad like Christina recommended, grill the sausages, slice then ad to the salad, it could be kept warm in the crockpot easily.

German potatoe salad is a warm dish. Or you could grill the brats then simmer with sauerkraut with caraway seed or other seasonings added; a slow-cooker would work great if he has to take it to school.

This small, dumpling-like pasta is squeezed through a noodle or cookie press. It's great with Hungarian Goulash!

When I think of German food, I think spaetzle- cheap, easy ingredients, and yummy...I ate spaetzle & gravy as a kid like other kids ate mac & cheese :-)

A dessert might be the easiest/cheapest approach. Proteins are expensive. "Do what nobody else is doing, and win 'fame' for thinking outside the box"!
