i would like to make a homemade pesto to freeze. I have family which are allergic to tree nuts. What can I substitute for flavor for pine nuts or any nut?

If your family is only allergic to tree nuts, Peanuts are a legume like a bean ground and used in moderation can be a substitute. Try sesame oil or seeds as well. A tad of Tahini will work too. But do please check to make sure no one is allergic to any of these ingredients as well.

les1227 - I once read in a cookbook that you could use any herb or nut combination to make pesto, but I have never tried it myself. I am thinking that some combinations might taste good, and other combinations might taste bad. Some home cooks on THEBUZZ have mentioned that it is better to use softer, oilier nuts for pesto.

Thanks the4talls, I saved that one for future reference. I am not allergic, but know others that are.
