I would like a good johnny cake recipe. My grandmother used to make it. She passed when I still young so I can't ask her. I remember we used to put syrup and butter on it eat it like a pancake.... Thanks

When you said johnnycake my mouth watered but I'm sure we aren't talking the same thing. My Mom made bread dough sliced it off after the first rising stretched it out and fried it. This we ate with butter and syrup or jam. She would loose about 3 loaves doing this treat for us. Miss her greatly

Sue, is this what you are remembering? I entered "Johnny Cake" in the search bar at the top of the page. You could cook the batter on a griddle, like pancakes, I have done the same with Jiffy cornbread mix. In fact, I think it's on the box as a suggestion.

This simple bread -- sometimes also called Johnny Cake or Journey Cake -- was originally baked on a farm hoe. Now made in an old-fashioned cast iron skillet, it's still a Southern classic.
