I am vegetarian and recently had to give up dairy for my 5 month old as she seems to be allergic. I would like to bake a cake but I don't have anything I can use for frosting. I would like a cake recipe that either doesn't need frosting, or that uses a a frosting that is just basic sugar and water. Does anyone know of such a thing? I do have crisco for the cake, but I don't like it for frosting.

Mix fruit juice and powdered sugar and pour over the cake.

yeah, I was planning on doing water and sugar, don't think the juice I have would work (it's green, tastes good though). I just need a cake to do it with. All my regular recipes use buttercream or cream cheese.

not sure if you can do butter. if you can't maybe you use a butter substitute. ??

that is the problem, I don't have any butter sub and I can't go shopping for a few days. I am also out of cornstarch (my 3yo dumped it out).

This is an old family favorite because it is not as sweet tasting as other frostings and is very fluffy.

yeah, I was ovo-laco (I ate eggs and milk products) but now with my daughter's allergy I can't eat dairy. What is your favorite cake to go with this?

A sweet, simple frosting with a caramel flavor, this has only four ingredients and is finished in just a few minutes.

what cake do you like this on? I really need a cake recipe. I also don't have all those extracts. I only have vanilla, orange, and almond. It sounds good though.

The frosting from this cake is wonderful and fool proof. The hot syrup cooks the egg whites. http://www.keyingredient.com/recipes/9825181/lane-cake/

You can make a cake like this and simply dust the top with powdered sugar.

Romanian Apple Cake

This is a wonderfully simple, yet delicious cake! It is so moist and fresh, it will surely be a favorite with your family, just like it is with mine! The main length of the preparation time is cutting and peeling the apples. A mixture of apples works great, although I usually use Golden Delicious.

That sounds good too. My kids just ate the last of the apples though. But I will keep it for after the shopping trip. Thanks.

This cake is make without milk or eggs and is moist, dark and delicious. A brain child of the depression era when ingenious cooks developed a cake that could be made without expensive and scarce ingredients.

My favorite no-dairy, no-egg cake. Very similar to the Crazy Cake above. For a white cake, omit the cocoa.

Thanks. I can still eat egg. Just dairy makes my baby sick if I eat it. I looked at this and the crazy cake, they are the same recipe just scaled different and one uses cider vinegar and the other uses white.

This meringue-style icing is cooked using a double-boiler and plenty of effort, but is otherwise fast to prepare and terrific on your cake.

This is like the seven-minute frosting of years ago.
