My husband cannot each mushrooms. When recipes call for cream of mushroom soup, such as a stew or stroganoff, what can I substitute?

I have a mushroom allergy so I am used to substituting cream of celery and depending on what I am making sometimes cream of broccoli.

What about making a "cream of" base mix and not adding anything to it? You'd have the benefit of the cream soup w/o adding an additional flavor you might not want in a particular recipe.

I agree with nanny and Volleyballmom. Cream of celery is good.

Cream of potato is a good sub. Mild flavor and you still get that texture your looking for. Fingers crossed I helped;)

I have a recipe that calls for cream of broccoli and cream of mushroom soups. But when I don't have those on hand, I sub with cream of celery and cream of chicken.

Thanks for your suggestions LLH, I'll give them each a try - the cream of celery might go well in my mom's scalloped potato recipe and I might try either of your suggestions in the stroganoff I'm making tonight.

I halve this and use chicken flavored Better than Bouillon when a recipe calls for a can of cream of mushroom soup. It looks, smells and tastes amazingly like Campbell's. Make it and leave out the mushrooms for a cream base in any recipe using cream of mushroom soup:
