Wondering how the commercial sauces get the seeds out. I am making my own from home grown tomatos and herbs this year. Last year we used canned, diced with juice. I don't recall seeing seeds. Anyone know how it's done?

Hi, you put them through a fine sieve or strainer and push all with the back of a wooden spoon.Hope this helps.

I was affarid of that. Hubs used diced last year out of a can and liked the chunkey was the sauce came out. Oh well it's seeds or strain. Thanks for all the grate links Linda and Sassy

I would imagine they use a strainer at some point. I use a hand cranked strainer/juice to do mine. A food mill also works. I normally cut my romas in half, try to remove as many seeds as possible, then run them through the strainer to remove the skins, cores, seeds. All that's left is the juice and pulp.

I have one like this that I hate, because the spout is so low. I also have an all stainless one. They make electric ones too and attachments to fit KA. http://www.enasco.com/product/C19780N

Well, if you hate it I don't want one either :) The county extension has one like this permanently attached to a table....If I only had the room :( .... http://www.homesteadersupply.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=68_227&products_id=1419

My all stainless one is a Presto, but I don't think they make them anymore. It has a spring problem so I have to stop halfway through and clean everything out. Because the other (well actually both do)attaches to the edge of the counter it makes the spout sit only a few inches off the counter which is impossible to fit a big bowl under so I have to fill and decant into something bigger. I did see countertop ones similar that wouldn't have this problem, but I crank that baby pretty hard. I don't think the suction ones would be very stable. Neighbor uses a big food mill, I just can't bring myself to buy a third gadget!

Creature of habit and I am doing less and less in the way of making sauce now. If I had my way we would have grass where the garden is ;) I would miss my squash and zucchini though!

Sounds like someone needs to make one that would monut in the middle of the sink so you could put the bowl in one side and the washed tomatoes in the other.

Robograndma, I use a Victorio strainer, you cut the tomatoes in half and put them in the hopper and turn the handle, the peelings and seeds are discarded and you are left with only the juice and pulp.

What's for dinner, mom?

I buy plum tomatoes in large quantities (or my garden when in season) and core them. That is it. I put them all in my 22 quart roaster with all my fresh herbs and seasonings. Once everything is well cooked I use my immersion stick blender to puree everything. You cant tell if seeds or skin are in there and my sauce is perfetly thick. No fancy strainer things needed. :)
