  1. Cream together the butter and sugar.
  2. Add one egg at a time. beat after each egg to the above mixture.
  3. Mix buttermilk and soda together and add to the above mixture
  4. Chop the orange candy slices and dates and add to the flour to coat each piece.
  5. Add the flour mixture to the creamed mixture
  6. Add pecans and coconut to the mix. Mixture will be stiff. Best to mix by hand at this point
  7. Grease and flour a 13x9x2 in pan and fold in the above batter.
  8. Bake at 250 degrees F for 2-3 hours until firm and lightly browned.
  9. Mix orange juice and confectioners sugar and pour over the hot cake. It is best to leave the cake in the pan overnight.
