  1. Heat the vegetable oil in a deep, heavy-based saucepan until a little bit of banana sizzles and when dropped in it;
  2. Add the slices of banana and, using a slotted spoon, separate the chips from each other as they fry;
  3. In a small bowl, mix together the turmeric, salt and pepper;
  4. When the banana chips are beginning to crisp and the edges are golden-brownish, carefully sprinkle over the turmeric mixture;
  5. The oil may splutter a bit but stir gently to combine;
  6. When the chips are cooked through and golden-brown, remove with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen towel;
  7. Sprinkle over chilli powder, to taste, and serve at once
