  1. In a large heavy pot, heat bacon fat over med high heat.
  2. Add apples and cook 2 to 3 minutes.
  3. Add cabbage, ground cloves, bay leaf, vinegar, sugar and pepper.
  4. Add water and stir everything together. Heat till liquid begins to boil.
  5. Cover and simmer, stirring occasionally, 2 hours or until cabbage is mushy soft
