Red Cabbage (German Style)

"I got this recipe from a German cookbook that I got from my German aunt who lives in Germany. I have been using it for years and love it. I added the powdered brown gravy mix to the recipe because I like it better that way. Some people also cook mixture with a slice of authentic pumpernickel bread crumbled into it. That is good, but hard to find the authentic pumpernickel bread. (In any case, it's great with or without the bread pieces.) My friends and family rave about the dish."

  1. Heat fat/butter in large dutch oven pot. When fat is hot, add chopped onions and bacon and fry until light brown (caramelized).
  2. Stir in all remaining ingredients except nutmeg, allspice, brown gravy mix and salt. (Those go in at the very end, after cooking for about an hour.)
  3. Cover and cook on low heat for about 1 hour until cabbage is very soft.
  4. At end of cooking time, add salt, ground nutmeg, and allspice. Then add dry brown gravy mix, to taste.
  5. Serve hot.

I love this recipe! It is delicious and easy to make (for a cabbage)! It tastes great and is always a hit! Thanks for sharing!
