Grandma's Date Nut Bread

  1. Preheat over to 350 degrees F.
  2. Chop dates and prunes and place in a large bowl.
  3. Pour 1 1/2 cup boiling water over raisins. Let them soak for aout 20 minutes. Drain water, bring to a boil, discard raisins.
  4. Add baking soda to 3/4 cup boiling water. Pour over fruit.
  5. Add butter, stir until melted. Stir in sugar and vanilla.
  6. When cool add 1 well beaten egg.
  7. Mix flour and salt, add to fruit mixture. Stir to blend.
  8. Add walnuts or pecans
  9. Pour into a loaf pan which has been greased with butter. Bake 50 - 65 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
