  1. Preheat the oven to 320°.
  2. Rub the garlic cloves against the sides of a large rectangular baking dish. Butter the dish.
  3. Heat the whole milk on high heat with the cup of butter and add the garlic, salt, pepper and if you wish, the nutmeg.
  4. Cut the potatoes in half-inch thick slices.
  5. When the milk is boiling, reduce to medium heat and add potatoes until almost cooked (around 10 minutes).
  6. Take the potatoes out and throw out the milk and garlic.
  7. Alternate potato and creme fraiche layers, starting with a layer of potatoes and finishing with a layer of creme fraiche and a few pieces of butter.
  8. Optional: Sprinkle gruyere on top.
  9. Cook for approximately 30 to 40 minutes, until the top is gold and crispy.
