"There are a lot of different southerns, Alabama is where we are from and we don't use sugar. So if you want dessert cornbread this is not for you. Otherwise this is the best loved cornbread of our family. Made with good ole bacon grease. Yummm I love cornbread and buttermilk with a slice of white onion. yumm"

  1. 1. Mix dry ingredients.
  2. 2. Beat egg with buttermilk.
  3. 3. Heat shortening in a 9 inch iron skillet in a hot oven (use shortening to coat the sides a little).
  4. Right before the fat is heated up, mix the egg and buttermilk into the dry ingredients and mix well. Immediately after, pour hot fat from the pan into the batter, stir into batter then pour the batter into the the pan. Bake at 475 until brown and done, 20 to 25 minutes. Turn out immediately (flip over).
